ABOUT US
Yough Intermediate Middle School, serving grades 5 through 8, is located 45 minutes southeast of Pittsburgh in Westmoreland County. Each year, YIMS Drama proudly presents a spring musical open to all YIMS students, including those in the fifth grade.
Auditions take place in December, with rehearsals running from January to April. We rehearse on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM. To support students’ involvement in various activities, cast members are not required to attend every rehearsal. YIMS Drama is dedicated to developing not only talented performers but also well-rounded individuals.
Our rehearsals include dance, acting, and vocal training sessions. The production staff strives to create a fun and supportive environment, helping students enhance their skills and build self-confidence.
YIMS Drama has become a lifeline for students – our program isn’t just about putting on musicals – it’s about showing strength in vulnerability, igniting passion, instilling confidence, and fostering a sense of belonging that transcends socioeconomic barriers. Teachers have reported that cast members become more engaged in class by answering questions, assisting their peers, and get higher grades – all due to their increased excitement about belonging to something.
WHO WE ARE
Access to the performing arts is not just important – it’s essential for the students at Yough Intermediate Middle School. In 2017, the Centers for Research on Creativity conducted a study with the Educational Theatre Association and found that “middle school students engaged in an after-school musical theatre program demonstrate improved confidence, creativity, resiliency, responsibility, collaboration, and sense of community.”
A positive and encouraging rehearsal culture is at the forefront of our mission. The YIMS Drama program is designed with thought and care to be a safe and inclusive space for students that may not have yet found an activity where they feel they belong.
I AM LOVED. I AM INTELLIGENT. I AM BRAVE. I AM KIND. I TRUST IN MY ABILITIES.
I AM UNIQUE. I REACH FOR THE STARS. WHATEVER I DO, I GIVE MY BEST.
ACCOMODATION POLICY

LEAD WITH LOVE
At YIMS Drama, a positive rehearsal culture is at the forefront of what we do, and we aim to be a beacon of creativity, acceptance, and teamwork. We celebrate all accomplishments – no matter how small.
At the end of each rehearsal, a cast member receives a gold star, which represents someone who has demonstrated leadership, empathy, and kindness. The gold star winner gets to lead us in our affirmations. One student receives the platinum star award at the end of the season. This award is to highlight our rockstar student leaders in the program.
