Auditioning can be scary! Hopefully this FAQ section will answer your questions and get you excited!

WHO CAN AUDITION?

Any student enrolled at YIMS is eligible to auditions. Yes, even 5th grade! No previous theatre experience is required – just enthusiasm and willingness to learn!

HOW DO I SIGN UP FOR AN AUDITION?

Registration for auditions is required, and can be done at yimsdrama.com/tickets. Click on the text above that says “audition registration”, or there is an “audition registration” tab on the top menu of the website. Registration opens Monday, November 10 after the audition workshop. You must complete the audition form at the same time as registering for auditions, so make sure to reserve about 5 – 10 minutes for that! Students who do not register in advance will NOT be permitted to audition.

IS THE AUDITION WORKSHOP ACTUALLY MANDATORY?

Yes! The workshop is designed to help you feel prepared and confident for your audition by learning the song choices, playing acting games, performing scenes from Footloose: Youth Edition, and learning about the show! This gives the production team more time to get to know you, too!

WHEN AND WHERE WILL AUDITIONS TAKE PLACE?

Auditions will be held in the YIMS Auditorium on Thursday, November 20 and Friday, November 21.
To get to know you better and to keep our groups smaller, there will be TWO sessions each day. One is 3:15 – 5:30 PM (stay after school) and the other is from 6:00 – 8:15 PM. You only will register for ONE session!

DOES IT MATTER WHAT AUDITION SESSION I CHOOSE?

No! Every audition session is EQUAL! This year, we are choosing to hold auditions this way to ensure that we get to know everyone a little better! We have a massive amount of interest this year, and we want everyone to get done quickly and auditions to run smoothly!

WHAT SHOULD I PREPARE FOR THE AUDITION?

Practice the song choices that are in your audition packet. No need to memorize! You can use the sheet music! Drink water and get plenty of rest the night before!

DO I NEED TO BRING ANYTHING?

Bring a water, snack, your signed code of conduct, and a great attitude! Please bring your sheet music from the audition packet. If you forget, we will have extra copies for you.

DO I HAVE TO DRESS UP?

No! The Director doesn’t cast based on outfit choice. Wear something that is comfy and easy to move in!

WILL THERE BE A DANCE AUDITION? DO I HAVE TO PARTICIPATE?

Yes! Also yes! You will learn a short dance combination. No specific training is necessary – just be ready to have fun and follow along! Do your best and don’t stress!

HOW ARE ROLES DECIDED?

Roles are assigned based on audition workshop participation and enthusiasm as well as audition performances. This includes acting, singing, dancing, and attitude during the ENTIRE audition process. Roles are NOT pre-cast. Do your best!

WHAT IF I’M NOT CAST IN A LEAD ROLE?

One of the most special aspects of Footloose: Youth Edition is that it is truly a show that relies on the ensemble to be a success. There are plenty of opportunities to be involved even if you don’t get a lead role. We need EVERYONE to make the show great!

WILL EVERYONE THAT AUDITIONS BE CAST?

While we would love to cast everyone at auditions, the production team must ensure that all cast members have a safe, enjoyable, and productive experience. We MAY have to limit onstage participation to ensure everyone gets meaningful stage and instruction time. If that is the case, we will offer any student the opportunity to be a member of the backstage/front of house crew, which will include painting, costuming, decorating the lobby on show nights, helping at the concession stand, and ushering!

DO I HAVE TO AUDITION TO BE A MEMBER OF THE CREW?

No! We will have an option to JUST do crew signup. On the form, there will be options for you to select your preference for which committee you would like to be on. Committees are: Painting, Costume, Social Media, Hair and Makeup, Props, Ushering, Lobby Decorating. There will be an expectation that crew will be able to attend all performances and assist there.

WHAT IS THE REHEARSAL SCHEDULE LIKE?

Rehearsals start Monday, January 5 and are Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 6:30 – 8:30 PM in the YIMS Auditorium. Not every student is scheduled to be at every rehearsal. Students and their guardians receive the ENTIRE rehearsal schedule BY the first rehearsal day. We always aim for a little earlier than that.

I’M AN 8TH GRADER WHO IS GOING TO DISNEY WITH THE MARCHING BAND.
WHAT DO I DO?

As we get older, it gets more difficult to participate in EVERY activity that we want to do! Those who are going to Disney must indicate that on their audition form. Students will be able to participate in Friday and Saturday’s show, but NOT be able to have the following parts: solos, speaking lines, or featured dancer.

I HAVE MORE QUESTIONS!

For additional questions, please contact Kyli Stoner, Director, at kyli.stoner@gmail.com or 724-812-2633 (call or text). We can’t wait to see you at auditions!
